Chapter 20: The Shower

Teresa's smile didn't fall.

It just froze where it was.

"Leo," she said. "What is she doing here?"

"You said bring a guest."

"I meant someone appropriate."

"I did." He put his hand on the small of my back. "Excuse us, Mom. It's cold on the steps."

He walked me past her into the front hall.

She had to step back or be walked into.

The front room was white and gold and full of flowers.

There must have been fifty people in it.

Women in silk and pearls, men in blazers, a waiter with a tray of tiny cakes shaped like baby shoes.

Every head in the room turned toward the door.

The talking stopped in a wave, from the front of the room to the back.

In the middle of it all, on a gold easel, stood a huge framed print of the sonogram.

One gray sac in a sea of black.

Beside it, in a pink dress, with one hand on a round little bump, stood Blythe Carrow.

She saw Leo, and her face lit up.

Then she saw me, and it went out.

"Oh my God," she said. "Is that her? Who let her in?"

Angela was by the window with a glass of wine and a tall man in a blue blazer.

She saw me and went the color of the tablecloth.

"Leo, you can't be serious," Blythe said, loud enough for the whole room. "You brought the gardener to my shower?"
