I hung up and sat at the kitchen table with the phone in my hand.

Leo was at the stove making oatmeal with Lucy in a sling on his chest.

He'd heard my half of it.

"They took you off the program," he said.

"They'd rather I watch from the crowd. Quietly."

He turned off the burner.

"Can I call the mayor?"

"No."

"Can I buy the newspaper?"

I almost smiled. "No."

"Can I stand next to you tomorrow?"

I looked at him, with our daughter asleep on his chest and oatmeal on his sleeve.

"Yes," I said. "You can do that."

Libby came over at noon and heard the news and kicked my recycling bin across the porch.

"Quietly," she said. "Quietly! You drew that park on bed rest! You were bleeding on a stool!"

"Libby."

"I'm going to make a sign."

"Please don't make a sign."

She made a sign.

Saturday was the last day of October, cold and blue and windy.

The harbor smelled like salt and fried dough from a cart someone had parked by the wharf.

Half of Portland seemed to be there.

There were kids in Halloween costumes running along the granite blocks.

There were rows of folding chairs set up in front of a little wooden stage with bunting on it.

The old woman who ate her lunch on the wall every day had taken her usual block early and refused to give it up.
