I didn't text her back.
I put the phone face down on the counter and went upstairs and lay awake until two.
At two, the kitchen door opened softly, the way it did every night.
I listened to him warm the bottles.
I listened to him hum the shanty to whichever one woke first.
I listened to the kitchen door close behind him at three.
Then I got up and found my sketchbook.
On the back page, under the list of baby names I'd kept for months, I wrote my answer.

I looked at it until the lighthouse beam went past twice.
On the twenty-ninth of December I drove to Portland with Libby.
"Where are we going?" she said.
"A jeweler."
She dropped her coffee in the cup holder.
"Lulu. Are you buying yourself a ring? Because that's sad, but I support it."
"I'm buying him one."
She stared at me all the way down Commercial Street.
"You're proposing," she said. "To him. You're going to propose to the man."
"He's never going to do it."
"Because you told him not to."
"Because I told him I'd choose."
Libby put both hands over her face and screamed into them.
