Chapter 7: Terms

Rafe didn't go back to the stage.

He sent his manager out to tell the room the rest of the program was canceled for a technical problem, and the manager went without a word.

Then he sat across from me with his elbows on his knees and told me about the last three years.

Reno on a Tuesday. A ring from a hardware store jeweler, because she said she didn't want anything fancy.

The brand, she'd said. If your fans find out you're married, they'll stop thinking of you as theirs.

"I believed her," Rafe said. "I wanted to. It sounded like she was protecting something I'd built."

"Why did you let her?"

"Because I'm gone eight months a year," he said. "I thought if she wore a ring on the wrong hand, it was still a ring."

"You didn't see her?"

"I saw her for a few weeks at a time. She always had a reason to be somewhere else." He looked at the floor. "My anniversary was in March. I ate dinner by myself in a noodle shop in Osaka and told the owner it was a work thing."

I didn't say anything. There wasn't anything to say.

"What do you want to do?" he asked.

"I want my house back."

"Tell me."

I told him about the deed, Dillon's debt, and the movers coming Monday.

Rafe listened with his whole face. By the end his jaw was tight.

"He needs money fast," he said. "And she needs me to stay quiet."
