Chapter 4: The Landline
I took the receiver in both hands.
Nolan took out his own phone, tapped the screen and laid it on the counter between us with the red dot showing.
I nodded to him once.
"Hello, Corbin," I said.
"Mar." A heavy, relieved breath came through the receiver. "Thank God. I have been out of my mind."
His voice was soft and warm, the voice he used on clients who were about to sign.
"Alana told me you got on a bus. I called everyone. I called the police, Keeley."
"I'm fine."
"I know you're fine now. I'm coming to get you tonight. Just tell me the address."
"You called the number you already know."
He didn't answer that.
"I want my money back," I said.
"What money?"
"The seventy-four hundred from the car. And the sixty-two thousand my mother left me."
"Mar, that's invested for our future."
"I never agreed to that."
"You signed the papers six years ago. You were grieving. You said you couldn't deal with any of it and I took care of it, the way I've taken care of everything."
I looked at Nolan.
He was reading me, not the phone.
"I don't remember signing," I said.
"That's what I'm worried about." Corbin's voice dropped, kind and slow. "You've been forgetful for months. Last week you lost your keys. Yesterday you cried at the dealership, didn't you? I think you're not well, and I think you're confused."
My hand tightened on the receiver.
I had not cried at the dealership.
I had never told him I'd lost the keys.
