Chapter 17: The Kitchen
The kitchen was dark except for the light over the stove.
Massimo stood at the long steel table with a knife in one hand and a loaf of bread in the other.
He was cutting it into thick slices, slowly, with his jacket off and his sleeves rolled.
He looked up when I came in, and he knew.
"Aurelio talks too much," he said.
"You moved the men on Friday."
"I did."
"You didn't tell me."
"You had enough to carry."
"I sat in that study and said yes to the chair, and you went out and put nine men on my street."
"Fourteen," he said.
"Fourteen on the street. Thirty at the docks."
"Without a word."
"I didn't want you to be afraid."
"I wasn't afraid at the ball. I wasn't afraid at dinner. I wasn't afraid of anything until I found out you were deciding what I could carry."
He put down the knife.
"The Dunleavys will not wait for January," he said.
"They sent a man to your table. I know how they work. I've known them since I was nineteen. If I'd waited for you to say yes, I'd have been burying someone."
"Then you tell me."
"You were at the Drake."
"I would have said do it."
