Chapter 16: Rory's Offer
The orchard house sat at the bottom of the lowest row, a one-room stone cottage with a woodstove and a green door.
Rory had lived there eight years.
I found him at nine that night with a duffel bag open on the table and a sheet of lined paper in his hand.
He didn't hide it.
"What's that?" I said.
"My resignation," he said. "As co-trustee. As estate manager. All of it, effective Friday."
I shut the door behind me.
"Why?"
"Because Austin's lawyer put a line in the filing this morning."
"I haven't read the filing."
"You should. Page six." Rory's voice was flat.
"It says the estate manager is involved with the owner and controls her land. It says I profit."
"You do not profit."
"I get a salary and a house with a leaky roof."
"Rory."
"It doesn't matter if it's true," he said. "It's in print."
"Every time you win, someone will say you're sleeping with the help."
"Let them."
"I won't hand that to him." He set the paper down on the bag.
"I signed those letters for five years, Ada. I won't give him another thing to use on you."
