Chapter 20: Anne's Letter
"It was in the coat pocket," Phyllis said.
She held it out flat on her palm.
"I went to hang my cardigan on the hook. The pocket was heavy on one side."
"You read it."
"I did not open it."
"Why not?"
"Because it isn't mine," said Phyllis. "I've done enough with other people's mail."
I took it from her hand.
The paper was soft and warm from her fingers.
The postmark was a Poughkeepsie one, nineteen years old, and the stamp had a flag on it.
My father had mailed it.
He must have done it the week after the funeral, when I was nine, and had not yet learned to sleep.
"Go inside," I said. "It's cold."
"Ada."
"Go inside. Wash the pots at six."
She went.
Rory came across the grass in his socks with a coffee in each hand.
He took one look at my face and put both mugs down on the step.
