Chapter 15: The Test
Tobias called the board together on Monday morning, and he asked me to come.
He said it with his hands, slowly, and he smiled the whole time.
"Just a few signatures," he mouthed. "Wear the grey suit."
He did not mention Geneva.
He did not say a word about the kitchen.
That told me he was going to test me again, and that this time he would do it where I could not run.
I thought about it in the car.
If I played deaf any longer, he would find a quiet room and a sharper noise and prove it with no one watching.
If I answered him in daylight, he would have to explain it to everyone.
I chose daylight.
The boardroom of Schuyler Audio was on the thirty-first floor, with a table the length of a bus.
Twelve board members sat along both sides, and at the far end, with his reading glasses on their cord, sat Albert Ward.
Geneva was not there.
