Chapter 18: The Full Hearing
The officers took him down in the elevator.
I stood in his study with my purse in my arms until I heard it ding.
Then I zipped the purse shut and put it in Jeanine's box with the letter.
"He'll lie about it," Jeanine said. "He'll say you planted it."
"In his safe," the policewoman said, peeling off her gloves. "On his wedding date."
She didn't say anything else.
The attorney locked the purse and the box in a cabinet in her office that afternoon.
Jeanine insisted on carrying the box in herself.
"Not a word about the bridge on Monday," she told me. "Monday is about whether you can run your own life. The bridge is for another room."
"Why?"
"Because your memory is the one thing they've spent seven years calling broken. I won't hand them the bridge until it stands on something besides your memory."
On Monday the courtroom was full.
Not the little room. A big one, with a balcony.
Reporters along the back wall with notebooks on their knees.
A row of young doctors from the clinic, still in their short white coats, trying not to look at Byron.
