Chapter 32: The Sign
COME DOWNSTAIRS. BRING A BRUSH. DON'T TELL JEANINE.
I read it three times, standing in one slipper.
Then I laughed out loud in my empty bedroom.
I put on my paint jeans and my oldest gray T-shirt.
I took my best lettering brush out of its sleeve.
I went down my outside stairs into the bright morning.
Jeanine was already there.
Of course she was.
She sat in a lawn chair on the sidewalk in front of the new shop, in her big hoops, with a coffee in each hand.
Beside her sat the salon women, four more lawn chairs in a row.
My niece and nephew were on the curb with a box of donuts.
"School doesn't start till next week," my nephew said before I could ask. "We checked."
"He told you," I said to Jeanine.
"He told me not to tell you he told me," she said. "That's different. That's a technicality."
Over the door of the shop, Clark had hung a long signboard.
It was primed a clean cream, and it was completely blank.
His tall ladder stood under it with black, green and gold already hooked on the rungs.
