Chapter 23: Pro Se Again
Cliff asked me on the sidewalk, and he asked it badly.
"Would you let me take you out for something that isn't a vending machine or a diner?" he said. "With tablecloths."
"Is that a question?"
"It's my first attempt at one."
"Yes," I said. "After you survive my cooking. Dinner at mine, the Saturday after next."
"You cook?"
"I microwave with confidence," I said, and he laughed all the way to his truck.
That was Monday.
The following Thursday, in the middle of November, the chairman of Metro's board called me to a meeting.
It was a long room on the sixth floor with a view of the Pavilion's roof.
The chair at the head of the table was empty.
The heavy man from the gala sat to its left now, in a gray suit, with a stack of paper in front of him.
Six other directors sat in a row beside him.
"Dr. Tarrant," he said. "Please sit."
"Thank you."
"Mrs. Hetherington resigned from this board on Saturday night and from the Foundation on Monday," he said. "The Pavilion keeps Alan Hetherington's name. It will not carry hers."
