Chapter 7: Quill
I carried the phone into Dess's bathroom, shut the door and sat on the cold tile with my back against the tub.
I had been Quill for ten years.
Three years ago I patched a hole in a trucking company's dispatch server, and it turned out to be Hetherington Freight's.
They hired me without knowing whose wife I was.
Fourteen months ago the dispatch board went red during a storm, and the CEO used Quill's number.
I opened the log now, with the tub cold against my spine.
Bennett's first message was a long string of capital letters and a question mark.
Mine was short.
"Breathe. Show me everything."
He did.
The board came back in an hour, and he kept writing.
He wrote with nothing held back.
I scrolled.
It was nearly three thousand messages.
"My father would have fired the whole IT department. I keep thinking I should be harder. I think I'm only tired," Bennett wrote in March.
"My wife made soup tonight. I said it was good. I wanted to say it was the best thing I'd eaten in a year. I said good," he wrote in May.
"Say the second thing," Quill had answered.
"If I say it, she'll hear that I'm happy. My mother notices when I'm happy. She finds the thing I love and tightens her grip on it until it's hers."
I stopped scrolling.
I read it again, on the tile, with my hand over my mouth.
"Joss would be good at this job. Better than me. She reads a contract once and sees every hole in it," he wrote in June. "I'd never say it at dinner, because Mother asks what she'd do with a job."
