Chapter 5: The Camera Log
Bradley put the call on speaker, because his hands were shaking too much to hold the phone.
"Mr. Alden, this is the Series C lead's counsel," a woman said. "We have received a notice of revocation of your core software license. Please confirm that you own the Littlebird code."
"Of course I own it," Bradley said. "It's a clerical dispute."
"The notice says the licensor is a Cora Lindell."
"That's my wife. She helped with the spacing, years ago."
"Then explain why she signed the notice," the voice said, "and why the license names her as the owner of every line."
Bradley's mouth opened and nothing came out.
I stepped closer to the phone.
"This is Cora Lindell," I said. "I wrote Littlebird. The notice is valid, and the clock is running. Send everything to my attorney, Bea Okafor."
The silence on the line was long and expensive.
"Ms. Lindell," the woman said at last. "Thank you. We'll be in touch with her."
The line clicked off.
Marilyn had not moved from the middle of the rug.
"You little fool," she said softly. "Do you know what you've done to my son?"
"Mom," Bradley said. "Not now."
I took my phone out of my pocket and tapped the dispatcher's number.
"This is Cora Lindell. I need that officer now. My husband grabbed my arm in front of two witnesses, and my mother-in-law is lying about a fall."
"A fall?" Bradley said. "Nobody has lied about anything."
"We'll see."
Ten minutes later, two officers stood in my living room.
