Chapter 21: Pete Cooks
Gran flew home on Friday with a window seat, a bag of Harborline pastries and a lasting suspicion of the Space Needle.
On Saturday, Pete and Maggie arrived at my door with a cooler.
"Don't hug me yet," Pete said. "There's a brisket in here, and I'll drop it."
"You brought a brisket on a plane?"
"I brought a brisket in a cooler in a seat of its own. I paid for the seat." He kicked the door shut behind him. "Where's my roommate? I have a speech."
"Fremont," said Maggie. She put her bag down and looked at me for a long time. "You look different."
"I look the same."
"You look like someone who's been kissed in the last forty-eight hours."
"Maggie!"
"I'm a nurse. I notice flushing." She hugged me, hard, and I heard her breathe out against my ear. "I'm so proud of you I could throw up."
"Please don't."
"I'll hold it for later."
Miles lived on the second floor of a narrow brick building with a laundromat underneath.
I had never been inside.
He always came to me, and I had never asked to see how he lived.
The door opened on one long room with a kitchen at one end and a drafting table at the other.
There was a mattress in the corner with the sheets made tight. There was a single plant on the sill, badly watered.
The walls were bare except for a corkboard over the table.
I looked at it for a second too long.
It held tide charts, bus maps, a postcard of the Space Needle with the corner folded, and a drawing of a small building with a glass front.
