Chapter 14: Testimony

Leone was sitting on the ward's front step in the rain, with no coat, and he stood up the moment he saw me.

"I told you not to follow," I said.

"I didn't. I live here."

It was almost funny, and I was too tired to let it be.

"Donata was on Delancey Street," I said. "She knows I know something. She's going to come for you before the hearing."

"She can come."

"She'll have you arrested."

"Then I'll be arrested after I testify." He took a breath. "Gemma, you don't have to take my testimony. You can still do this without me."

"I could."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because I want to see what you do when I don't tell you what to do," I said.

He didn't say anything.

I walked past him into the ward.

It was past midnight, and every cot was occupied, and every face turned my way.

The old baker was sitting up with a blanket around his shoulders and a crust in his hand.

"Doctor," I said.

Leone came in behind me, dripping on the floor.

"Tell them," I said.

"Gemma, it's one in the morning."

"Then it's the right time. Everybody's awake, and nobody's going to forget it."

The nurse set down her chart.

The boy with the asthma sat up on his elbows.

Leone stood in the aisle between the cots and looked at the patients who had come to him for help.

"I used to work at the Transfer Wing," he said. "You know that. What you don't know is that I drew forty-one percents of Gemma's love for her husband."

Nobody spoke.

"I'm telling you now, before anyone else can, because you've slept in my beds and eaten at my table, and you should know who gave you your breakfast."
