Chapter 11: Everything Held
Jud drove home with Yancey asleep against the passenger window, and did not turn on the radio.
He parked in the garage and sat without moving.
Beside him Yancey's mouth was slightly open, and there was a smear of dried tears along one freckled cheek.
Jud watched the rise and fall of his chest.
Nine years.
For nine years he had known exactly what he would do if Yancey Crenshaw ever stood in front of him.
He had rehearsed it in the shower and on the drive to work and at three in the morning with his back against the headboard.
It had never once involved a gravestone.
He got out, came around the car, and opened the door.
"Hey," he said. "We're home."
Yancey blinked awake.
"I fell asleep."
"You did," Jud said.
"I'm sorry. I'm not a good passenger."
"You're a fine passenger." Jud held out a hand. "Come inside."
In the kitchen he made grilled cheese.
He did it without thinking, in a cast-iron pan, with too much butter, the way a woman in a small house in Beaumont had taught him when he was eleven.
He realised it only when the smell rose.
He stopped, with the spatula in his hand, and put it down.
"Jud?"
"Nothing."
Yancey stood in the doorway in his rumpled shirt.
His eyes were red, and he was looking at the pan with an expression Jud could not read.
"That's her recipe," he said.
"I know. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to."
"Don't be sorry."
"I wanted," Jud said, and could not finish.
Yancey crossed the room.
He took the spatula, lifted the sandwich from the pan, flipped it onto a plate, and cut it diagonally, the way she always had.
He pushed half toward Jud.
They ate standing up at the counter, in silence, and it was the best thing Jud had tasted in nine years.
Later, upstairs, he stood at the window with his back to the room.
