Chapter 15: On His Knees
Jud was kneeling on the rug at the foot of the bed when Yancey woke.
The sky behind the live oak had gone grey, and the first birds were starting.
Jud had washed his face.
The cut on his lip had scabbed, and a dark red mark had spread over one cheekbone.
He knelt with his hands on his thighs and his eyes on the floor.
Yancey sat up slowly.
"What are you doing?"
"Waiting," Jud said.
"For what?"
"For you to tell me what you want." His voice was quiet. "I've been here an hour. I didn't want to wake you."
"Get up," Yancey said.
"No," Jud said.
"Jud, get up off the floor."
"Not unless you tell me to."
Jud raised his eyes.
"I don't know how else to say it. I've spent nine years giving orders. I've been wrong the whole time. I want you to give me one."
Yancey stared.
He had wanted this, in a petty private corner of himself.
He had wanted to see Jud Trammell on his knees, for years, and the wanting had curdled somewhere in the night.
Now that it was here he found he didn't want it.
What he wanted was harder.
"I'm not going to punish you," he said.
"I know," Jud said.
"I'm not going to forgive you, either. Not yet. Maybe not for a long while."
"I know that, too."
"Then why?" Yancey asked.
"Because I need you to have something," Jud said. "Something I can give. I don't have anything else."
Yancey was silent.
He thought of the letter in the drawer and the twenty in the shoebox.
