Chapter 24: June
The new tug sat at the Galveston dock in the June sun with a white sheet over her bow.
Yancey stood beside her in a borrowed blazer with a bottle of champagne in his fist.
"You have to swing it harder," Dewey said.
"I know how to swing a bottle," Yancey said.
"You've never swung a bottle."
"I've seen it on television," Yancey said.
"It's a hull, not a piñata," Ira said, from a folding chair, with his cane across his knees.
A crowd stood on the dock behind a short length of rope.
There were harbor workers in hard hats and reporters with notebooks, and the port commissioner in a seersucker suit.
Dewey's whole crew had come in two trucks, and the women had brought a cake.
Jud stood a little apart with his hands behind his back, in a plain grey suit, watching.
He had been watching Yancey for twenty minutes.
He did not seem to know that his face was doing something it did not do in front of the press.
It had been seven months since the gala.
The district attorney had listened to Jud for three hours on a Monday morning and had written a long careful memo.
