Chapter 13: Six Years Old
Nash didn't move.
Neither did the trucker on the stool behind him.
"Say that again," Nash said.
Bodie pressed into my side.
"It was Delaney. She said it in the hall, the night after I came."
"What else?"
"Grandpa said keep your voice down. She said the pup's asleep." Bodie picked at the edge of his blister. "I wasn't asleep."
Nash sat down on the end of the booth across from us.
He did it slowly.
"She found me," he said. "She carried me two miles down that ridge."
"She knew where to look," I said.
He put his face in his bandaged hands.
The door opened without a sound, because the bell was still lying on the floor where it had fallen.
The elder came in on his cane.
Two pack men came in behind him and stood by the pie case.
Every person at the counter looked at their plate.
"There he is," the elder said. "Our little runaway."
Bodie slid all the way behind me until I could feel him breathing against my back.
The elder looked at that.
