Chapter 18: The Ledger

I looked at his hand on the door frame.

It was the second time he'd stood at a motel door and asked me for something through a chain.

"No," I said.

"Not here," I said. "Not through a door at six in the morning with nobody watching."

"Then where?"

"On the moon stone. In front of your pack. All of them."

"You told me to wait in a rental where nobody would see me," I said. "If you want to ask me something, ask me where everybody can see."

"The fifth," he said slowly.

"If I'm still standing on the fifth."

"You'll be standing." He folded the letter along its creases. "I'll make sure of it."

Behind me, Bodie sat up in the bed with his hair flat on one side.

"Dad?"

Nash's whole face changed.

He crouched down so his eyes were level with the gap in the door.

"Hey, buddy."

"Do I have to go back?"

Nash looked at me.

I knew the answer, and I hated it.

Bodie had shifted once already. If he shifted again in a motel room in Spokane, somebody would call animal control. Somebody with a gun.
