Chapter 24: Silver Moon
I didn't answer him right away.
I looked over his head at Nash.
Nash had heard. Everybody on the stone had heard.
He came over slowly and crouched down in front of Bodie, in Ross's too-long work pants, with his shoulder still bleeding.
"You want to live with Mom," he said.
Bodie nodded.
He held on to my jacket with both hands.
"Okay," Nash said.
Bodie blinked.
"Okay?"
"School weeks in Spokane with Mom. Full moons here with me, so you can run with the pack and learn the ridge." Nash looked up at me. "If your mom says so."
"And no cellar," Bodie said.
"There's no cellar. They're pulling the bars out right now."
Bodie looked at me.
"Mom says so," I said.
He let go of my jacket and threw himself at his father, and Nash closed his eyes and held him.
The moon was high now, and the silver on the granite behind them was so bright I couldn't look at it.
In December I rented an apartment two blocks from the Northside, over a hardware store.
The first full moon after we moved in, Bodie went north to run the ridge with his father.
The apartment was so quiet I could hear the radiator tick.
Ross carried the last box up the stairs at nine that night and set it down by the door.
His lip had healed. His hand had too.
He stood in my kitchen in his coat, with snow melting on his shoulders, and didn't take it off.
"I should go," he said.
"You should take your coat off."
He looked at me.
I walked over and pushed it off his shoulders myself, and let it fall on the box.
"Jolene."
"I said not yet on a motel carpet," I said. "Then you had me against a door behind the diner. Do you remember what you said you wanted?"
"A door that locks from the inside."
I reached past him and turned the deadbolt.
It was loud in the quiet.
"I'm not waiting for anything anymore," I said. "Not the moon, not the pack, not a letter. I want you. Tonight. In my bed."
His eyes went dark.
"Say yes, Ross."
"Yes," he said, rough. "God, yes."
He cupped my face in both his big chapped hands, the way he had on the carpet, and this time neither of us stopped.
I took his hand and led him out of the kitchen, past the box by the door, down the short hall to my bedroom.
The radiator clanked once, sharp, like a shot in the quiet.
My bed was unmade, the quilt kicked to the foot, and the lamp by the bed was on, low and yellow.
I turned to face him.
He was so big in the doorway that he blocked the hall light, and his face was in shadow except for his eyes.
