Chapter 7: His Mother's Box

I read it sitting on his side of the bed.

Jolene, if you're reading this, he's gone to them, so you need to know that I was human too, and I was their Luna.

His father's wolf chose me at a county dance when I was nineteen. I didn't know what he was until the wedding night.

I wore the silver for two years. Every Luna of Silver Moon before me was human.

That's why it's silver. No wolf can carry it. Only the one the Alpha's wolf chooses.

The elder hated it. His family always wanted the stone for themselves.

When I was carrying Nash, the elder told the pack a human Luna had made the Alpha weak. He said it so many times they believed it.

My husband let them send me down the mountain. He said it was for my safety. He said wait.

I waited thirty-one years. He never came.

I took the silver with me so nobody else could wear it.

If they ever wake his wolf, they'll tell you a human can't be Luna. That's a lie the elder made up the year I left.

Don't let them make you wait.

I put the letter down.

My hands were steady.

The rest of me wasn't.

Downstairs, the front door opened.

"Morning," Ross said, loud and friendly, the way people talk when they want someone upstairs to hear.

"Who are you?" Delaney's voice.

I put the letter and the photograph back in the tin.

I pressed the lid down and tucked the tin under my arm and went to the top of the stairs.

Delaney was in the front hall in her red coat.

Two men stood behind her on the porch. Pack men. Big, in dark jackets, with the same stillness the men in the yard had on Friday.
