Chapter 1: The Gate
Cal walks out of prison to a voice that has forgotten him and finds his mother being dragged from Mercy General. He carries her out himself. She asks what surgery.
The prison gate opened at six on a Tuesday morning in November, and nobody was waiting behind it.
Cal Bracken stood on the cold pavement in the jeans and jacket he had worn into court.
They hung off him now.
He looked up the road and down it.
No car. No sign. No face he knew.
The guard had told him he would call Cal's people about the release date.
Cal had only ever had two people.
He took the old phone out of the plastic bag they gave him and dialed Lena's number from memory.
It rang four times.
"Hello?" Her voice was light and quick, the voice of a woman in the middle of her morning.
"Lena. It's Cal."
"Who is this?"
He held the phone away from his ear and looked at the screen.
Then he put it back.
"Cal Bracken. I'm out."
"Oh." A short pause. "Cal. Wait, already?"
Already.
He had scratched every one of those days into the paint on his cell wall.
"The guard said he called you. I thought you'd be here."
"Did he? I don't remember a call. It's been crazy at work, you know how it is."
"How's my mother, Lena?"
"She's fine." There was no pause this time. "Everything is handled on that end. I told you I'd take care of it, and I did. She's resting at Mercy General."
"The surgery. Did she have the surgery?"
"All taken care of. I have to run. I'll send you a little something to get settled, and we'll catch up soon."
She hung up.
His phone buzzed once.
Fifty dollars, and a pin dropped on a map.
Three years ago, in a hospital hallway, Lena had promised him a hundred thousand dollars for his mother's heart surgery.
All he had to do was sign a confession to a hit and run that Preston Ridgway had committed.
Preston was the rich man whose family Lena worked for.
Cal had signed that night, with his mother on the other side of the glass.
He got into the first taxi that came by and gave the driver the address.
Then he opened the app he had not touched in three years and typed Preston's name.
The feed was Lena.
Lena on a boat. Lena at a vineyard. Lena laughing with her head on Preston's shoulder.
The newest post was from that morning.
Preston on one knee on a rooftop. Lena with both hands over her mouth, her left hand already out for the ring.
The caption said, "She said yes."
It had nine thousand likes.
Under it, a man Cal used to drink with had written, "About time!!" and Lena had answered with a heart.
Everyone had known.
Cal locked the phone and pressed it against his forehead until the taxi stopped.
The lobby of Mercy General was loud when he walked in.
A woman was screaming near the elevators, and it took him a moment to understand it was his mother.
Two nurses had Joan Bracken by the arms.
Her gown was twisted around her thin body and her bare feet slid across the tile.
"Mom!"
Cal ran.
By the waiting area a young woman in a dark coat stood up from the bench with a cane in her hand.
She looked straight at him for one moment, then turned and went out the side door.
He did not stop for her.
He caught the lead nurse by the sleeve. "Let go of her. What are you doing?"
The charge nurse shoved him off, and he hit the floor on both elbows.
"Who are you?" she said.
"I'm her son."
"Then you can pay her bill." She held up a clipboard. "Her account has been past due for thirteen months. This is a hospital, not a shelter."
"Thirteen months? I was told it was handled."
"Whoever was covering her stopped paying thirteen months ago. Take it up with them."
"Please," Cal said from the floor. "I'll pay. Give me a few days."
She looked at his loose jeans and his prison jacket, and she laughed.
"With what? Look at you."
She turned to the other nurses. "Put them both on the sidewalk."
His mother's hand reached for him across the tile, and her lips moved with no sound.
Every person in the lobby was watching, and no one moved.
Three years ago he had signed away his life because one person told him to.
He got up.
He took off his jacket and wrapped it around his mother's shoulders.
Then he lifted her himself, all ninety pounds of her, and walked her through the glass doors before anyone could touch her again.
The wind outside bit through his shirt.
He sat her on the bench at the bus stop and held her hands between his.
"It's all right, Mom. I've got you. I'm home."
Joan looked up at him with wet, tired eyes.
"Cal," she whispered. "Why did you say I had surgery?"
"It's done, Mom. Lena said it was done."
"Nobody ever touched me, baby," his mother said. "What surgery?"
