Chapter 20: Lena's Phone
Lena came to the garage at midnight, alone, in the rain.
Cal saw her through the office window: a cream coat gone dark at the shoulders, no umbrella, no driver.
Kira sat next to him on the cot with a mug in her hands.
"Don't open it," she said.
"I'm going to."
"Then I'm staying."
He went down the stairs and unlocked the side door.
Lena stood on the step with her hair plastered to her face and her phone held out in front of her in both hands.
"They're going to blame me," she said.
"Come in."
She followed him up the stairs, and she stopped dead in the doorway when she saw Kira.
For a moment nobody moved.
"Sit," Cal said.
Lena sat on the only chair and set the phone on her knees.
Her mascara had run in two black lines.
"Preston told his father about the courthouse," she said. "I was in the room. Gerald didn't even look at me. He said, *We'll need someone to have made the decision. She was the one who spoke.*"
"You said keep driving," Kira said. "He wants it to be you."
"He's always wanted it to be me. I'm the girl from the lake with no money." Lena laughed, and it came out cracked. "I was a secretary at his father's company for two years before Preston ever noticed me. They'll be glad to have a name."
"What do you want?" Cal said.
"A deal."
"From who?"
"From you." She leaned forward. "You go to the district attorney. You say I was coerced. You say Preston threatened me, you say I was in the car because I was afraid of him. And I give you everything on this phone."
