Chapter 30: Main Consort
The marriage was held at sunset, and James ranked them in front of everyone.
Felix had expected a speech.
What he got was James standing on the dais with a feather, a shell and a scale in his hands and a very worried face.
"I have to say an order," James said. "Apparently that's the tradition."
"It is the law of the Seat," said the herald.
"It's a terrible law. Can I just say I love all of them equally?"
"No, Your Majesty."
"Fine."
James turned to Grant, and lifted the feather.
"Second consort. You are the first man I ever lost an argument to, and I'd like to keep losing them."
Grant bowed, and the corner of his mouth moved.
He turned to Harry, and lifted the shell.
"Third consort. You said never in the water, and then you gave me the whole sea."
Harry bowed with great dignity and went a little pink at the ears.
Then James came down the steps to Felix, and held out the green scale.
Felix's heart began to pound.
"Main consort," James said. "Because on the first day, you thought you owed Bella, and you came anyway, and you told me the truth to my face. You did the right thing when it cost you."
The hall was silent.
"Also," James added, lower, "you bring snacks."
Felix laughed.
It came out wet and broken, and he took the scale, and bowed his head, and did not trust himself to say a word.
Hours later, in the royal bedchamber, he still could not.
The door shut.
The lamps were low.
Felix stood by the great bed in his wedding coat, with his hands shaking, and watched James lock it.
"Main consort," James said.
"Don't say it again, I'll cry."
"Main consort."
"James."
James crossed the room and took him by the lapels.
"Take it off," he said. "All of it."
Felix's fingers fumbled the buttons.
James waited, and did not help, and watched with half-lidded eyes while each one came loose.
The coat fell.
The shirt followed.
Felix was hard already, and his face burned, because James was looking.
"Freckles," James said. "All the way down."
"They don't stop."
"I know. I've been checking."
He kissed Felix's collarbone, then the soft spot below it, and drew a slow line of kisses down his chest.
