Chapter 10: The Moon Court

Ronan's POV

By noon on the day of Moon Court, there were nineteen Alphas in my hall and two hundred wolves in my yard.

I stood on the dais with my hands behind my back and counted exits.

I had done it every year since I was fifteen.

This year I counted something else too.

I counted how many of the nineteen had read Stonewater's letter.

It was most of them.

Wynne tied my cravat that morning.

She had never done it before, and she did it badly.

Her tongue was between her teeth and her warm hands were at my throat.

"Don't kill him," she said.

"I make no promises."

"Ronan."

"I won't start it."

"That isn't what I asked."

I kissed her, hard, so she would stop talking.

She let me, and then she swatted my chest and went to find her shoes.

I would have given a great deal to have her stay in that room until it was all over.

I did not say so, because she would have refused.

I stood on the dais and watched the great doors.

They opened at the stroke of noon, and the Alphas turned.

She came in with Edda at her side.

Edda had made the gown, in deep green wool, cut high at the throat to cover the scar.

It had taken her six nights, and she'd sworn at every stitch.

Wynne walked up the center of my hall with her chin level and her braid pinned up.

I saw the red-bearded Alpha from the eastern hills step out of her way before she'd come within three paces.

I saw the others do the same, one by one, without a word spoken.
