Chapter 24: The Year and a Day
The marshal came to the east tower at dawn, with a scroll under his arm and a very stiff back.
I was sitting up in bed with Elias on my knees, trying to stop him from eating the quilt.
He was nine months old now, round and loud and heavy, with silver eyes and no patience at all.
Ronan was still asleep beside me, one arm thrown across my waist.
"Luna," said the marshal, from the doorway. He did not look at the bed. "Forgive the hour."
"What is it?"
"It's the day."
I looked at him blankly.
"A year and a day, Luna. From the Blood Moon. The ward's term is done."
Ronan's arm tightened around me before he opened his eyes.
"Marshal."
"Majesty. The law of the line requires it be read."
"Then read it."
The marshal unrolled the scroll.
He cleared his throat and read it in a flat voice, the old words about a female of the offender's house, held a year and a day, free to go at the end of it by any road she chose.
He read the part about the gate, and the horse, and the purse of silver the King owed her for her trouble.
When he got to the end he rolled it up again and stood very straight.
"You may leave this hold today, Luna, and no one will stop you. It's the law."
Elias had found the marshal's face and was staring at him.
"Thank you," I said. "I'd like the horse."
Ronan went completely still.
I felt it in the arm across my waist.
I got out of bed, with the baby on my hip, and put on the green wool gown, which Edda had mended with a seam so neat you could hardly see the tear.
