Chapter 11: The Third Step

Imogen's POV

At four in the morning the side door opened, and Simon came in.

He wore a dark overcoat over a suit he had clearly put on in a hurry, and he did not look at the guards or the empty chair.

He looked at my wrists.

"They didn't hurt you," I said. "The cord was soft. I made sure."

"You made sure."

"I asked your man to tie it that way when I told him the plan. It had to look real from the car."

"Imogen." His voice was very low. "Did you plan this?"

"Yes."

"All of it?"

"The warehouse. The crew. The call." I sat on the edge of the table and found that my knees were not steady. "I knew where they would take me, and I knew who would send them. I didn't know how to say it without sounding insane."

"You sounded fine to me."

"You didn't ask me why."

"I said I wouldn't."

"You also said you'd put two men outside my house, and you put a crew in a warehouse instead." I looked at him. "Nobody does that for a stranger on a feeling."

He was quiet.

His hands, I noticed, were not quite still.

"Ask me," I said. "I'd rather you did."

He took a step toward me, then stopped.

"At the gala you went down the steps and the third one tilted," he said. "You caught the rail."

"I told you I did."

"You didn't, last time."

The room seemed to empty.

I could hear the wind in the roof, and the faint ticking of cooling metal.
