Chapter 7: Board Night
Eleven days after the gala, my father called an emergency dinner of the Ferrell Foods board.
He did it in the private room of the Harbor Club, with white linen, nine directors and one empty chair.
The empty chair was mine, and the invitation had come on his own letterhead.
I went because I expected a trap, and I wanted to see its shape.
Simon sat across the table from me.
A director had invited him as a guest.
I was almost sure the director did not know who he was.
"Gentlemen," my father said, once the soup was cleared. "My elder daughter will turn twenty-eight in five weeks. On that date her late mother's shares transfer into her name."
"Eleven percent," said a director.
"Eleven percent." My father folded his hands. "Imogen has made her feelings about this family public. Cecily has a charitable purpose and a clear head. I propose that Imogen sign a voting proxy today, giving the family's shares to be voted by Cecily until the transfer is settled."
He slid a thin folder down the table.
It stopped in front of my plate.
"It's only a precaution," Cecily said, from beside him. She wore pearls, my mother's pearls, with the earrings. "I'd never use it against you."
"I'll read it first," I said.
"Read it now," my father said.
I opened the folder and turned the pages.
I did not need to read them.
I looked up and counted the faces round the table.
Four of them would not meet my eyes.
