Chapter 16: The Vote
The Creedon Foundation board met on the ninth floor of a glass tower, at a table long enough to seat sixteen.
Eleven trustees were already in their chairs when I walked in.
Cornelia sat at the far end in a gray suit, with her pearls and a single sheet of paper in front of her.
She did not look up.
"This is a closed session," the board chair said, a tall man with a white mustache. "Ms. Garrard is not a trustee."
"She's my guest," Carl said behind me.
He wore a clean jacket over his work shirt and held the family's chair, the one his father left him, with one hand on its back.
"The Creedon seat can bring a guest," he said. "Section four."
The chair looked at the bylaws in front of him, and he nodded.
I sat beside Carl with my bag on my knees.
Cornelia finally raised her eyes.
"Mr. Chairman, I'll be brief," she said. "The foundation has an obligation to its donors, who gave in good faith to a gift of life."
"The woman beside Mr. Creedon consented in March to be tested as a donor. She now refuses, publicly, and she has used the foundation's name in the press."
"I move that the foundation bring suit against her for breach."
A trustee in a blue scarf cleared her throat.
"Cornelia, was there a signed consent?"
"The hospital's chart says so."
"May I?" I said.
The chair looked at Cornelia, and Cornelia said nothing, and so he nodded.
I took three things out of my bag and laid them in a row on the polished wood.
"This is the health care proxy Nigel used," I said. "It's dated the day after our wedding."
"It was witnessed by Emmeline Creedon, who sits on this foundation's patient council."
