Chapter 13: The Inner Door

We buried him behind the altar, in the floor of the temple he'd died in.

My mother said the words. She was the only one who knew them.

Then we stood in front of the inner door.

It was bronze too, but it had no handle and no hinge we could see.

There were three round holes in the face of it, set in a triangle, each one the size of a ring.

Ren put his thumb in one. It didn't fit.

Min-jun tried the door with his shoulder. It didn't move.

"It's not a lock," Ren said. "It's a keyhole three times over."

"Then we need the rings," I said.

"We need the rings," Min-jun said.

He said it in a certain way. I turned and looked at him.

"Say the rest," I said.

He looked at the door.

"He's going to come here anyway," he said. "He told you eight days. He's got riders on the road already. We don't have to wait for him."

"Go on."

"We go to him first," Min-jun said. "We find where he's camped. I know his habits. I know how he sleeps and how many men he keeps close. We take the rings off his hand in the dark and we come back and open this door before he knows they're gone."

I looked at him for a while.

"You want to rob him," I said.

"I want to take three rings off a man who murdered four families," Min-jun said. "That's not robbery."
