Chapter 27: The Offer
I didn't answer him in the tent.
I walked out and stood in the camp and looked at the fires.
Then I went back in.
"Say it again," I said. "In front of everybody."
The commander looked at me.
"What?"
"Say the offer again. Out loud. Where the camp can hear it."
He stood up.
"That's not how this works."
"That's how it works tonight."
I walked out of the tent and got up on a supply cart by the fire.
There were a few hundred people in the camp by then. Soldiers, mostly, and their families.
They turned around.
The commanders came out of the tent behind me.
I waited until they were all standing there.
Then I said, loud:
"The commanders have an offer."
The camp went quiet.
"They'll make me lord of this valley," I said. "They'll put the whole army behind me."
Somebody cheered.
"On one condition."
