Chapter 17: One Way to Lisbon

Thane's POV

At twenty to eleven I stood in the Columbus airport with the detective's number open on my phone.

My eyes were on the security line.

Nadine was beside me, and Cassidy was behind her with Bernie's old cardigan over the navy dress.

"Don't hit him," Nadine said.

"I have no plans to."

"You have a look."

"I plan to read him a document."

She almost smiled, and then she squeezed my hand once and let go.

The detectives had told us to wait by the pillar while they got the paperwork from a judge.

They had also told us not to approach him.

I watched Trevor walk in through the sliding doors with his black carry-on.

He had changed out of his tuxedo into a quarter-zip and loafers.

He looked relaxed, a man leaving for a long weekend.

He took out his phone at the end of the security line and tapped it, and then he smiled at the screen.

"He's sending it," Cassidy whispered. "He's moving the money."

"The bank's hold is still on," Nadine said. "The detective said it would look like it went through."

Trevor put the phone in his pocket and stepped forward in line.

Behind him a family with two children was loading shoes into gray bins.

I did the thing the detective had told me not to do.

I walked across the terminal floor and stopped in front of him.

"Dunleavy," I said.

He looked up, and his face went blank.

Then it came back, warm and pleasant.

"Rayburn. Funny. Are you flying tonight too?"

"No. I came to see you off."

"That's thoughtful."

"Where are you going?"

"A conference. Lisbon."

"One way?"

His eyes flicked past me and found Cassidy standing by the pillar with Nadine.
