Chapter 15: Effective Immediately

The uncle set the receiver down on the hall table and pressed the speaker button.

The line hissed. Then a dry, careful man's voice filled the great room.

"Judith. Are you there?"

"I'm here," Judith said. "Whatever you received, it is a family matter and it has been doctored."

"I'm sure that's what you'd like me to believe."

"I am the chair of this company."

"Yes. For the moment."

Nobody in the room breathed.

"I watched the video three times last night," the director said. "Then I called five other directors, and they watched it. We met by phone at seven this morning. We have a quorum."

"You have no authority to meet without the chair."

"Our bylaws say otherwise, and we checked them twice."

The uncle sat down on the arm of a chair. His wife had taken hold of his sleeve.

"Here is what we did," the director said. "We voted five to one to withdraw yesterday's announcement. Brant Thornquist is not the president of Thornquist Marine."

I looked at Brant.

He was standing very still beside the fireplace.

"We also voted to place the chair on leave while outside counsel reviews how the Monday vote was handled."

"On leave," Judith said. "Of my own company."

"Of a company the board answers for. Yes."

"This is a coup."

"No, Judith. A coup would have been quiet."

The older man let out a short breath that might have been a laugh.

Brant took a step toward the phone.
