Chapter 20: Engaged
Nicholas walked all the way around the black shell of the trailer.

He looked under the sedan. He looked in the ditch behind the park, and in the brush beyond it.
I called every hospital between Odessa and Midland from the hood of the truck.
No man with a limp. No man of that age with burns.
The sheriff's deputy took our names and wrote "acquaintances" beside them.
"Folks run off out here all the time," he said. "Specially after a fire. Specially if they owe somebody."
"He was supposed to come with us at nine," I said.
The deputy looked at Nicholas's Montana license.
"Then I guess he changed his mind."
At nine o'clock exactly, Nicholas's phone was in his hand.
It didn't ring.
At ten, we drove to Midland.
On the plane he sent the recording to his lawyer in Helena.
He sent a copy to a bank in Bozeman too, into a box under his grandmother's maiden name.
Then he sat with his forehead against the window for two hours.
