Chapter 30: The Microphone
Nicholas looked at me for a long moment.
Then he nodded once and went to see if the truck would still drive.
The officer said a detective was on the way.
"Tell the detective we'll be at the reception," I said. "So will she."
My father climbed out of the sedan before the paramedics could stop him.
"So will we," he said.
She took his arm and walked him to Nicholas's truck, and they squeezed onto the bench seat beside me.
On the way back I called our lawyer.
In August he'd sent the accountant's whole file to the Manhattan district attorney.
"They were going to pick Bryant up Tuesday morning," he said, "before the closing."
"He's at his reception. Russell has a helicopter on the lawn."
"I'll call them right now."
The patrol car followed us all the way to the gate.
The tent glowed at the end of the lawn.
The band had just finished the first dance.
Bryant was standing at the microphone in front of the head table, flushed and happy, with his arm around Shelby.
Behind them hung a huge screen, showing photos of the two of them on a loop.
