Chapter 32: The Same Road
My father looked at Bryant's father for a long moment.
"Nine o'clock," he said. "I'll be in my chair."
On Tuesday morning the lobby of Ferraro Tower was full by eight.
Staff from every floor stood along the marble with their coffee.
On the wall across from the elevators, where the pale square had been all summer, my mother's portrait hung again.
The restorer had closed the hole in her cheek so well that I had to know where to look.
My mother stood in front of it in her navy dress.
"He fixed the dress too," she said. "I still don't like it."
The guard who used to give me butterscotch was at the desk.
I put my badge to the reader.
The light turned green.
The boardroom on the forty-first floor had water at every place.
Bryant's father was already sitting at the head of the table, in my father's chair.
The closing papers for the tower sat in a neat stack at his elbow.
My father walked in and stood behind him.
He just waited, with one hand resting on the back of the chair.
The cousins looked at the table.
