Chapter 43: Revoked
On Friday the courtroom in Riverhead was full by nine.
Reporters filled the back four benches and stood along the wall under the windows.
The judge had allowed one pool camera, on a tripod by the door, because of the spring.
I sat in the second row.
It was the row Bryant had asked me for on the courthouse steps in April.
It was just on the other side of the aisle, behind the prosecutor.
My mother sat on my left in navy and pearls, with her handbag square on her knees.
Nicholas sat on my right, on the aisle, where nobody could reach me without going through him.
"Eleven rows," my mother said, counting under her breath.
The order kept Bryant a hundred yards from her everywhere but a courtroom.
Here, the judge had put eleven rows of benches between them, and my mother had counted every one.
Bryant came in at ten past nine through the side door with his lawyers.
He was in gray today. Softer than navy.
His father came in behind him and took the front bench, gold cufflinks shining.
Bryant didn't look at the press. He looked at me, and at my stomach, and lowered his eyes.
