Chapter 11: The First Night
Odessa did not deny it.
She stood in the lantern light with her hands folded and her chin up, and she looked tired for the first time in six years.
"Yes," she said. "I knew."
"Mother," Dalton said.
"I knew the week she came. I smelled him on her at the wedding feast, and the morning after your wedding night I found his mark already risen on her."
She looked at me.
"You were asleep, dear. I tied the scarf myself."
I could not speak.
"A Luna with a Lycan mate belongs to Blackmoor," Odessa said, to the elders now, in her council voice. "Not to us. In ten years this pack would have been a border province. I did what a Luna does. I protected Ember Ridge."
"You let your son think his wife didn't want him," the oldest elder said slowly.
"I let him think the bond was slow."
"For six years!" Dalton's voice cracked. "I thought I was broken. I thought she was cold. I looked at other women because I thought that was the only way to feel anything."
"Darling."
"Don't." He backed away from her.
His face had gone wet, and he did not wipe it.
"I called her a bad wife in front of the pack. I offered her a room in the east wing."
He looked at me then, and for the first time in years he really did.
"Eloise," he said. "I didn't know."
"I know," I said.
It was the truth, and it did not make me forgive him.
"But you didn't ask, either."
He nodded once, and he did not argue.
I stepped out of the lantern light.
I put my hand on Lucan's wrist, where it still hung beside my neck.
