Chapter 18: Odessa's Fall

I got Lucan alone for ten minutes behind the hall, between the noon fight and the dusk trial.

The wind had come up off the ridge.

He stood with his back to the stone wall and his hands in his coat pockets.

"Tell me what a full mark takes," I said.

"I meant to tell you."

"When?"

"Tomorrow. Next week. After you'd had a night to breathe." He shut his eyes. "I was a coward about it, and that was wrong."

"Tell me now."

"The mark you wear is half. The full mark is a bite, and it binds two wolves for life. Your life becomes a Lycan life." He opened his eyes. "Two hundred years, if nothing kills you. Three, with luck."

I stood very still.

"Hattie has sixty," I said.

"Yes."

"Dalton has fifty good years. Everyone on that green will be in the ground before I look any different."

"Yes."

"And you didn't think I should know that before I said yes to anything?"

"I did think so." His voice cracked. "I thought it every night for six years. It's why I told you I'd give you the seal. It is not a cheap thing, Eloise. Odessa is right about that, and she's right about nothing else."

I looked at him for a long time.

I was angry, and I was not angry at him, and I could not tell yet which feeling would win.

"We'll talk about it after," I said. "I won't decide with her sitting there watching me do it."

"All right."

"Don't touch me yet."

"All right," he said.

I took his hand anyway, and we walked around the hall together.

The council seated itself at dusk, in lamplight, with the Stone Book moved indoors.
