Chapter 16: What Lu Wants

They took Lu down to the inn's dock because the paper walls had ears, and the dock had only ducks.

A small rowboat bumped against the pilings.

Lu sat on the end of the planks with his knees drawn up, and Mian sat beside him with his feet in the water.

Shouyi stood behind them with his arms folded, since he had never sat on a dock in his life.

"All my duels are a performance," Lu said. "The leaps, the hair, the long speeches. I like them. I am good at them."

"You are very good," said Mian.

"But nobody has ever fought me. They watch, and they clap, and they lose."

"Then you came, and you copied me, and for the first time I had to figure out what I was doing."

He looked at Mian, shining.

"I want one fight with no show in it. Just two men. Whoever is better."

"I'd lose," said Mian.

"You would not."

"I'd lose very slowly. It's the only way I know how."

Lu laughed, and wiped his eyes.

"Why are you like this?" he asked. "Truly. You have a gift. You could be anyone."

"I don't want to be anyone."

"Why not?"

Mian kicked his feet in the water.

"Because when I was sixteen I fixed a mill wheel," he said.
