Chapter 16: The Forged Will
Lucas told them at dawn, in his bedroom, in as few words as he could.
Felix listened with his arms around the black book.
Troy listened with a hand over his stomach and a face getting darker by the sentence.
Julius listened without moving, and when it was over he said only, "She has stood in that room every third night and said nothing."
"Moorhaven," said Felix. "We ride for Moorhaven today."
"Today," Lucas agreed. "Before she gets there first."
The pounding on the outer door came before he finished the sentence.
Six guards in the white and silver of Melinda's household filled the doorway.
Behind them came a stout man in a magistrate's black coat, carrying a leather case, with a roll of paper tucked under his arm.
Melinda walked in last.
She had put on a blue gown and a gentle smile, and she looked well rested.
"Forgive the hour, brother. The magistrate has come with sad news."
"Does he always bring his own guards?" asked Lucas.
"The deeds of Moorhaven have been examined," said the magistrate, a little too loudly. "A will has come to light among your late father's papers."
He unrolled it with a flourish.
"It leaves the Moorhaven estate to his stepdaughter, Melinda, should his son be found unfit to hold the Seat."
"My father died without a will," said Lucas.
"This is it."
"My father couldn't stand his own handwriting. He had a clerk write everything."
"It is signed," said the magistrate, "and it is sealed."
"By whom?"
The man did not answer.
Troy took a step toward him, and two of the guards moved to stand in his way.
Melinda raised a hand.
"There is more, I'm afraid. The inquiry has found cause for the Supreme Omega's removal from the palace, for his own protection and the Primes' safety. Ash Lodge has been prepared."
