Chapter 4: The Library

Felix chose the palace library for his bargain, because it was the one room in the building where no one went after dark.

He had lit a single lamp at the far end, by a long leather couch and a wall of locked glass cases.

He stood beside the couch with his hands clasped behind him.

"One night," Felix said, when Lucas walked in. "That is my offer. I take the pain, I take the marks, and you will not bite my neck."

"Why not your neck?"

"Because Optimus Pack sees my neck every day." His pale blue eyes did not blink. "Troy came to breakfast this morning with a ring of teeth under his jaw. The whole table saw it."

"And you want to be different."

"I want to be exact." Felix lifted his chin. "I have read the old law three times since yesterday, and I know what you are doing. I am not here to be tamed. I am here to be certain."

Lucas leaned against the nearest bookcase and looked him over.

Felix was lean and long, with a straight back and silver-blond hair gathered at his nape by a plain black ribbon.

His scent was iron and mint, cool and clean, and it was the first smell in the palace that did not make Lucas's stomach clench.

"Take off the ribbon," Lucas said.

Felix did not move. "Why?"

"Because I asked."

A slow breath, and then Felix reached up and drew the ribbon loose.

His hair fell around his shoulders in a pale sheet.

Lucas took the ribbon from his fingers.

"Turn around. Hands behind your back."

"I don't..."

"Felix."

He put the weight of his scent into the one word, and Felix's lips parted.

He turned around.

His wrists crossed at the small of his back without another word.

Lucas wound the black ribbon twice around them and knotted it.

"You can't command me," Felix said unsteadily. "Not the way you did Troy. I'm not built like that."

"I know. So you're going to ask me."

He pushed Felix down onto the couch, face up, and the pale head fell back on the leather cushion.

Then he started on the buttons of that grey coat, one by one.

Felix's chest was lean and hard, and his skin was cool to the touch. When Lucas slid a thumb over one nipple, his whole body went rigid.
