Chapter 4: The Address on the Card
The card in my hand had a room number on it.
The room was on the eighth floor of a hotel I had never been inside.
I did not knock right away.
I stood in the hallway with my coat still buttoned and my heart going too fast.
Then I knocked twice.
The door opened.
Leonard stood in the frame with his sleeves rolled to the elbow and his glasses off.
He did not say hello.
He stepped back and let me in.
The suite was warm and plain, one lamp on, the city lying out behind the window.
No folder on the table. No laptop.
Just him.
'Why me?' I said.
I had not stepped past the little entryway.
I wanted the answer before I gave him anything else.
He looked at me for a moment.
'Ask a better question,' he said.
'No.' I kept my voice level. 'That is the question. Why did you put me in your meetings? Why did you read my model twice? Why did you stand at the back of that room and let Halton put his name on my work?'
He was quiet.
Then he walked to the window and stood with his back to me.
'Because you were the only person in that building who would find the number,' he said.
'What number?'
'You already found it.' He turned. 'You just have not said it out loud.'
