Chapter 21: Say It to Him

Dalton's POV

I texted Noelle from the diner parking lot before I took a step.

Colette is at the bus stop on Superior Street with Arlen and a bag. I'm going to talk to her. I'll tell you everything after, and I'll tell you where I am.

She wrote back in under a minute: Where on Superior?

I sent the cross street. She wrote: I'm coming. Don't promise her anything.

I put the phone in my pocket and walked.

The bus stop was a glass shelter with a bench, and the wind came straight off the lake through it.

Colette sat on the bench with her duffel at her feet and Arlen asleep in the stroller, wrapped to the nose in a blue blanket.

She didn't look up when my boots stopped in front of her.

"The bus is at four-ten," she said. "You've got thirty minutes, and then I'm gone, and you can tell everyone you won."

"I'm not here to win."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because he's Jack's son," I said. "And you're his mother, and I've watched you do every wrong thing there is. I'd still rather you didn't vanish."

She laughed. It was a short, dry sound.

"Sit down, Dalton. You make me tired standing."

I sat on the other end of the bench.

The wind cut through my jacket.

"I'm going to give you two choices," I said. "I want you to hear both before you answer."
