Chapter 16: The Auction

Wyatt's POV

I kept the card in a desk drawer for five years because I couldn't throw it away and couldn't carry it.

The first Tuesday I walked into that church basement, I had it in my shoe.

Nobody there asked me anything.

A man with a gray ponytail handed me a Styrofoam cup of coffee, and I nearly walked out again, because I had not taken a cup of coffee from a stranger since the night on the ramp.

The tech from the Portland ER was fourth on the list I wrote for my sponsor, with a note beside her name: "Only a first initial. Card says N. Holzer."

I had decided to make my amends when I was worth it.

Then the agency list came, and her name was on it, and I forgot everything I had practiced.

Pru was right to say I'd made a mess of it.

Bethany was right, too, and it was the truest thing anyone had said to me in five years.

I'd had no answer for her.

I did not try to follow her.

I had learned to leave a thing alone when I was the one who'd broken it.

But I could still do something, and for six days I thought about what it was.

On Thursday night my phone lit up with the Portland number again.

I picked it up this time.

"Wyatt." It was the chief of emergency medicine at the hospital where I'd been a resident. "I've called you five times since September."
