Chapter 17: The Gatekeeper
"There," Torren said, behind me, very softly.
His chin rested on my shoulder.
He was looking at the far light, and he did not sound surprised.
"I've watched this hold for it since the ribbon came. Tonight he finally gave me something to see."
"You knew it was him?"
"I knew it was someone who could reach the gate lamp. I wanted proof the hall could see."
At dawn Cadoc rode in with the sun behind him, and three Ashfen riders walked ahead of his horse with their wrists roped.
They had arrived at the Long Ford at first light, with swords out, to meet a crossing that did not exist.
Twenty Ironmere wolves had been waiting in the reeds.
Nobody was hurt, and the riders looked humiliated.
"They had a chest of silver chains," Cadoc said, pleased. "For the wounded."
The great hall filled before the porridge was served.
Torren sat at the high table, upright now, with Aldith's stick hooked on the edge.
I sat at the lowest table, between the two brothers, with a bowl in front of me.
