Chapter 24: The Healing House
The old line ran green and wet in the first light, and it was no longer empty.
Overnight, someone had pegged out the shape of a long building along the riverbank, and laid the footings in stone.
The grey stone came from Ironmere's quarry, and the brown came from the boundary wall that had stood between the packs for a hundred years.
Between them, at every corner, stood a post.
I knew them by the black.
They were charred oak, hauled down the hill from the burned long house, and stood on end as the corner timbers of something that would live.
"We started at midnight," Gethin said, yawning beside me.
"Cadoc did the measuring. I did the singing."
"He did not do the singing," said Cadoc.
"The cook fed us, and Aldith swore at us. It was the finest night of my life."
Torren said nothing, and his hand found mine.
The sling was gone, and his arm moved stiffly.
I looked at the long black corner posts, and I couldn't say anything either.
