Chapter 10: Sunday Dinner

"What is that?" I asked from the doorway.

Rafferty did not jump.

He closed the folder slowly and turned in his chair, and in the lamplight his face was tired and unguarded.

"Something that isn't finished," he said.

"It has Hollister's name on it."

"It does."

"You told me you'd stop deciding things for me."

"I did, and I'm not." He stood and crossed the room, stopped in front of me and took the edge of my sheet in his fingers. "It isn't only mine to tell. There's another person in it. Give me until Sunday dinner and I'll lay it all out, with her blessing."

"Her."

"Hedwig's table. Sunday at six."

I studied his face.

I wanted to push, and he saw that I wanted to.

"Five days," he said. "You can have the whole file after. You have my word."

I turned over the ring on my left hand with my thumb.

"Five days," I said. "And if I find out something in the meantime, I won't owe you any patience."

"Fair."

"Come to bed, Raff."

He came, and he made sure I forgot to be angry until morning.

The Caldecott house stood on a hill in Fox Chapel behind a long drive lined with bare maples.

It was the sort of house that had stood too long to be vulgar, grey stone with ivy to the roof.

Hedwig met us in the front hall with her cane and a fresh brooch.

"You're three minutes late," she told Rafferty. "You've grown careless in love."

"I've grown careful in love, Gran."

"Dreadful liar." She tucked her arm through mine and led me toward the dining room. "Thora, dear, you will sit on my right. My grandson will sit across from you and make sheep's eyes. It is customary."
